In Australia black is associated with death or sadness but in China white is the colour of mourning. In China, Thailand and Buddhist countries red is considered of be a lucky colour and is often worn at weddings. Filmmakers need to understand these symbolic codes if they are using colour to create specific meanings. Narrative Codes and Conventions Narrative codes determine the way we organize and portray a story. How an audience approaches a story may be influenced by their personal familiarity with the codes of storytelling. A usual expectation may be that a story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Filmmakers may vary this sequence and its success will depend on the willingness of the audience to accept the change. Television news programs provide a good example of narrative codes in action.
